What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

We consider a dental emergency to be any situation where you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your teeth, gum tissue or surrounding bone and jaw joints. If you are experiencing pain from a sudden or a lingering toothache, fracture or knock-out tooth, or have been involved in an accident that involves your teeth and/or jaw should be treated by a dentist immediately.

The Dental Team at High River Dental accommodates emergency dental patients by reserving time in our daily schedule specifically for dental emergencies. We are also pleased to accommodate both existing and new patients who are unable to see their regular dentist in a timely manner. To help you before you arrive at our High River dental office, we will offer our assistance over the phone to advise you on how to remain as comfortable as possible until you are able to be seen at our High River Dental Office.

If you are experiencing any of the following, please contact our office immediately for assistance:

  • Teeth that have been knocked out (TIP: keep tooth under your tongue or keep it submerged in milk)
  • Chipped, cracked or broken teeth
  • Injuries to the soft tissues such as biting your lip or tongue
  • Loose teeth
  • An infection of the teeth or gums that is not controlled with over-the-counter pain medications
  • Broken or damaged restoration such as a dental crown, filling or bridge
  • Pain and/or discomfort after recent dental treatment
  • Jaw pain could be an early sign of a heart attack. If you suspect you are having a heart attack, call 911 immediately.

To manage these common dental emergencies, until you can visit our office, please visit CDA Dental Emergency Management.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Preventing a dental emergency one of the best ways to avoid accidental dental emergencies. Booking an appointment at High River Dental on a regular basis for a comprehensive dental exam and regular check-ups and cleanings help us check for signs of weakened teeth, loosened or aging restorations and early the signs of infection that may suggest the presence of infection.

Patients who participate in sporting activities that could cause a dental emergency are encouraged, regardless of their age, to wear a custom mouth guard while playing contact sports. A large percentage of dental injuries are related to sports and wearing a custom mouth guard prevents many of these injuries from occurring.
